Overview of Our Client

Our client was a European DTC brand selling customizable printed products, including stickers, patches, packaging, and labels through Shopify. Each order could contain a unique combination of product variants, sizes, materials, quantities, and customer-provided customization.

Before the project, operators manually prepared print layouts for individual orders in graphic editing software. This limited print throughput and increased the risk of errors as order volumes grew.

The client engaged SCAND to automate the print preparation process while retaining operator control over the final print queue.

  • Region: Europe
  • Industry: E-commerce, Print-on-Demand, Custom Packaging & Labels
  • Timeline: ~3–4 months

Challenge

The main challenge was connecting a dynamic e-commerce order flow with deterministic print preparation. Shopify orders could contain different product configurations and custom fields, while the resulting layouts needed to follow precise production rules.

The solution also had to support conditional layouts, nesting multiple designs on a single sheet, RIP-compatible PDF output, and stable processing during order peaks. At the same time, the workflow needed to remain human-in-the-loop, allowing an operator to review each generated layout before sending it to print.

Main Goals

The main goal was to automate the path from a paid Shopify order to a print-ready file but preserve flexibility for different product configurations and operator control over the final print step. This way, the solution was created to:

  • Automatically receive paid order data from Shopify
  • Convert product variants and custom fields into layout rules
  • Generate production-ready PDFs with accurate cut geometry
  • Optimize material usage through automated nesting
  • Produce files compatible with RIP print workflows
  • Provide an operator review and approval stage
  • Prevent duplicate processing and lost orders during peak periods

Project Overview

SCAND developed a middleware service connecting Shopify, order-processing logic, a conditional layout engine, and the print preparation workflow. Shopify webhooks delivered paid order information to the system, where product SKUs, quantities, variants, and customization data were converted into a structured order model.

The system then selected the appropriate layout rules and generated the required print composition. A nesting engine arranged multiple designs on the available print area, after which the service produced a production-ready PDF with the required cut contours and print settings.

The generated files were placed into an operator queue, allowing the production team to review the layouts before sending them to the RIP system.

Solution

The delivered solution automated the path from a paid Shopify order to a ready-to-print PDF while preserving manual control over the final production step. It connected Shopify order processing, conditional layout generation, automated nesting, and PDF preparation into a single workflow.

The system interpreted product variants, quantities, and customer customization data, selected the appropriate layout rules, and generated optimized print compositions. It then produced RIP-ready PDF files with the required cut contours and print settings and placed them in an operator queue for final review and approval.

Core Platform Capabilities

  • Shopify Integration: Received paid orders through Shopify Admin API and webhooks.
  • Order Processing: Parsed SKUs, variants, quantities, and custom fields into a structured order model.
  • Conditional Layout Engine: Applied different layout templates based on product type and customization parameters.
  • Automated Nesting: Arranged multiple designs on a print sheet while accounting for required cut-line spacing.
  • PDF Generation: Created production-ready PDFs with cut contours, spot colors, and required print settings.
  • RIP-Compatible Output: Prepared files for direct use in RIP software without additional manual conversion.
  • Job Queue: Managed processing priorities and prevented duplicate generation when webhook events were repeated.
  • Operator Panel: Provided a central interface for reviewing and confirming generated print jobs.
  • Order Traceability: Logged the processing path from the original Shopify order to the final PDF.

User Workflow

  • A customer places a customized order through Shopify.
  • The paid-order webhook sends the order data to the automation service.
  • The system identifies the product configuration and selects the appropriate layout rules.
  • The nesting engine creates an optimized print composition.
  • The system generates the final PDF and adds it to the operator queue.
  • The operator reviews the layout and sends the approved file to the RIP print queue.

Results

The Shopify-to-print automation solution replaced manual layout preparation with an automated production workflow capable of generating print-ready files within seconds. Automated nesting improved material utilization, while conditional layout rules reduced errors associated with manually preparing customized orders.

The solution also introduced reliable job processing for high-volume periods while preserving an operator approval step before printing. The main outcomes included:

  • Print layout preparation reduced from manual production work to automated generation within seconds
  • Lower material consumption through automated nesting
  • Reduced errors in customized print layouts
  • Stable order processing during peak sales periods
  • Full operator control over final print approval
  • Easier expansion to new product types through configurable layout rules
