Overview of the Client

The client is a healthcare technology provider. They build solutions for hospitals that manage large volumes of patient data and insurance documentation.

Their goal was to create a single platform. It needed to automate billing workflows, generate compliant medical documents, and reduce financial pressure caused by long insurance payout cycles.

The system also had to support very high transaction volumes and meet strict US healthcare and data protection regulations.

Challenge

The client needed a platform that could operate under strict US healthcare regulations while processing very large volumes of sensitive data. The system had to ensure full HIPAA compliance, including secure handling of protected health information (PHI), auditability, and controlled access across millions of records.

Another challenge was modeling complex and variable workflows related to insurance claims, hospital billing, and patient interactions. These processes involve multiple steps, frequent changes, and different stakeholders, which require a flexible orchestration approach.

In addition, long insurance payout cycles created cash-flow pressure for healthcare providers. The platform also had to support large-scale generation of detailed medical documents without affecting performance, reliability, or data security.

Primary Objectives

  • Ensure HIPAA-compliant automation by providing a secure and fully auditable environment for storing, processing, and archiving medical documents and protected health information (PHI).
  • Introduce a financial clearing layer that allows hospitals to track, clear, or trade expected insurance receivables, improving liquidity and transparency of payment flows.
  • Enable no-code workflow orchestration using BPMN-based processes so teams can design and adjust complex billing and claims workflows without deep development effort.
  • Support high-load processing by implementing an asynchronous, message-driven architecture capable of handling large bursts of document generation and data operations without performance degradation.

Project Overview

The platform was designed to extend traditional medical ERP capabilities by adding a financial clearing layer for insurance claims. It processes clinical and billing data and uses Variable Data Printing (VDP) to generate the exact documents required by insurance providers at scale.

Workflow execution is managed through a BPMN-based orchestration engine, ensuring that every step of claims processing and billing follows US regulatory requirements. In addition, the system treats insurance receivables as financial assets, enabling hospitals to clear or exchange expected payments within a controlled ecosystem to maintain stable cash flow.

Solution

The result was a high-performance healthcare platform that manages the full lifecycle of medical data, document processing, and insurance-related financial operations. The system combines large-scale document generation using Variable Data Printing (VDP), a HIPAA-compliant BPMN-based workflow engine, and a financial clearing layer that allows healthcare organizations to clear or exchange expected insurance receivables to maintain stable cash flow.

Key Features

  • Large-scale medical document generation using Variable Data Printing (VDP) with precise data mapping
  • BPMN-based workflow automation powered by Apache Camunda for visual process design and execution
  • Financial clearing functionality that enables tracking, exchanging, and reconciling insurance receivables
  • Automated settlement engine that verifies and clears expected payments once funds are confirmed
  • Centralized identity and access management with enterprise-grade authentication and authorization
  • Asynchronous, message-driven processing ensures stable performance under high document and data loads
