Overview of Our Client
Our client was an innovative agricultural enterprise specializing in precision farming, soil analytics, and AgTech solutions. The company provided field survey services designed to optimize fertilizer consumption and monitor soil health across large agricultural areas.
To scale its operations, the client needed the help of an AgTech app development company to create a mobile solution capable of managing soil sampling tasks, communicating with proprietary sampling hardware, and operating in remote field environments with limited or no cellular connectivity.
- Region: Western Europe
- Industry: Agriculture / AgTech / Industrial IoT
- Timeline: ~8 months
Challenge
Traditional soil sampling workflows depend heavily on manual operations, which often result in positioning errors, improper field navigation, and delays in transferring collected data to laboratories. Thus, the main challenges included:
- Lack of centralized control over proprietary soil-sampling hardware
- Inaccurate positioning and tracking of sample extraction points
- Inefficient navigation on large and complex agricultural fields
- Poor cellular connectivity in remote rural areas
- Manual preparation and processing of laboratory sampling certificates
- Need to support both iOS and Android from a single maintainable codebase
Main Goals
To support the client's precision agriculture mobile app development needs and digitize field operations, we established the following goals:
- Develop a cross-platform mobile application for managing soil sampling workflows
- Establish Bluetooth Low Energy communication with sampling hardware
- Implement precise geospatial mapping, field division, and route planning
- Build an offline-first architecture capable of operating without network connectivity
- Automate the generation of sampling certificates for laboratory submission
- Improve field operator productivity through task planning and GPS-guided navigation
Project Overview
We developed a cross-platform mobile application that became the central control hub for the client's soil sampling operations.
The application connected physical sampling devices with enterprise backend systems, allowing managers to schedule sampling campaigns and assign tasks to field operators. Operators could divide fields into sampling zones, navigate between designated points, and record sampling results directly from their mobile devices.
The application collected data from both the external sampling hardware and the smartphone's GPS module. Operational data was stored locally and automatically synchronized with the backend whenever connectivity became available.
Solution
The delivered soil sampling app development solution transformed manual soil sampling into a connected digital workflow combining mobile technologies, IoT communication, geospatial computing, and offline data processing. We implemented several technical approaches:
- Dual-source GPS tracking using external IoT telemetry and native smartphone location services
- On-device field sectorization using standard grids and Voronoi-based zoning
- AI-assisted route calculation and pathfinding optimization
- Native C/C++ execution through Dart FFI for computationally intensive geospatial operations
- Reactive BLE communication for real-time hardware status and coordinate retrieval
- Local data caching to preserve operational progress without network access
- Automated PDF/XML certificate generation for laboratory data submission
Core Platform Capabilities
- Cross-platform iOS and Android application built with Flutter
- Automated sampling task scheduling and field operator assignment
- Interactive polygon-based field mapping and grid-splitting tools
- Advanced field zoning using computational geometry
- AI-assisted route calculation and real-time GPS tracking
- Real-time BLE communication with proprietary sampling equipment
- Background synchronization with the backend through secure API
- Digital sample records containing timestamps and precise geolocation
- Automated generation of PDF and XML sampling certificates
User Workflow
- Task Planning: Managers scheduled sampling campaigns, divided field operations into tasks, and assigned operators.
- Field Mapping: Operators viewed agricultural fields and configured sampling zones using interactive mapping tools.
- Route Optimization: The system calculated efficient routes between sampling points based on field geometry and operational requirements.
- Sample Collection: Operators navigated to designated locations while the application collected GPS and hardware telemetry and recorded sample data.
- Offline Operation: All operational data was persisted locally on the device when connectivity was weak.
- Synchronization & Export: When a connection was restored, collected data was synchronized with the backend and sampling certificates were generated for laboratory processing.
