Overview of Our Client
Our client was an education-oriented digital publishing business building a modern textbook rental ecosystem for students, teachers, and academic institutions. Their goal was to distribute copyrighted educational materials through a digital platform that could maintain strict DRM protection and ensure a convenient experience on both web and mobile devices.
In addition, the client required scalable cloud infrastructure capable of supporting millions of users, withstanding peak academic traffic, and allowing publishers to quickly integrate large libraries of content in PDF, ePub, and Pearson HTML formats.
Challenge
Digital textbook platforms typically face a difficult trade-off between security, usability, and performance. In this project, hence, the main challenges included:
- Implementing strong, real-time AES encryption and access control without degrading the reading experience or performance.
- Converting large libraries of PDF, ePub, and Pearson HTML materials into a unified internal format.
- Handling millions of users and thousands of requests per second during peak academic periods.
- Developing algorithms to accurately “discover” knowledge (briefs, illustrations) from static textbook formats for interactive use.
Main Goals
To fulfil both publisher-grade requirements and large-scale user demand, we defined the following goals:
- Provide publishers and authors with a bulletproof DRM environment and anti-piracy solutions for eBooks to protect digital textbook rentals.
- Allow teachers and authors to build and tailor educational materials “out of the box.”
- Move beyond passive reading by providing automated content summarization, annotations, and social interaction layers.
- Deliver a high-quality experience (including vector zooming) across both web and mobile devices.
Project Overview
We developed a cross-platform educational publishing platform combining textbook rental, content conversion, and interactive learning tools. To create a scalable infrastructure, we used AWS services for asynchronous document conversion and analytics processing, guaranteeing uninterrupted system operation even under high load.
To handle large-scale content onboarding, we implemented an asynchronous conversion pipeline capable of processing PDF, ePub, and Pearson HTML content into a high-performance internal format.
Solution
The delivered platform served as both a secure storage and delivery system for copyrighted materials and an interactive learning environment. It enforced DRM policies through AES encryption and live access control, as well as provided built-in authoring tools for custom publishing.
The platform supported both web and mobile environments and included advanced features, such as vector-based page zooming, deep search, social interactions, and AI-driven content discovery capabilities that extracted structured insights from different books.
Key Features
- AES-based DRM and real-time access control for secure content distribution.
- Vector-based page rendering and zooming optimized for both web and mobile reading.
- Advanced full-text search with deep indexing of educational materials.
- AI-based knowledge extraction generating briefs, illustrations, and structured annotations.
- Built-in authoring suite enabling publishers and educators to create bespoke materials for specific curricula.
- Social learning layer with ratings, threaded comments, and recommendation features.
- Detailed analytics for engagement tracking and book performance reporting.
Technology Stack
To support large-scale secure publishing and peak academic concurrency, we selected the following technologies:
Cloud Infrastructure
- AWS (Auto-scaling Groups, SQS)
Storage
- AWS S3 (encrypted book storage)
Database & Analytics
- PostgreSQL Cluster
Processing Pipeline
- AWS SQS + background workers (format conversion)
Encryption
- AES-based DRM logic and real-time access control
Content Formats
- PDF, ePub, Pearson HTML
Platforms
- Web (Angular) and Mobile (iOS/Android)
Core Team
- Cloud & DevOps Architects: Built AWS scaling strategy, SQS pipelines, and encrypted cloud storage workflows.
- Security Engineers: Implemented DRM logic, AES encryption, and access control mechanisms.
- Full-Stack Developers: Developed the reader UI, authoring tools, and social features.
- Data Scientists: Developed knowledge discovery and recommender algorithms.
- Content Engineers: Implemented conversion logic for complex educational formats.
Results
The platform combined secure digital textbook distribution with a modern, interactive e-learning tools experience. In particular, we achieved:
- Strong revenue protection through DRM and real-time access enforcement.
- Faster onboarding of large book libraries through digital publishing workflow automation and automated conversion pipelines.
- Higher engagement due to social features, annotations, and recommendation logic.
- Improved learning outcomes through AI-driven briefs and knowledge discovery features.
- Stable scalability for millions of users during peak academic demand.
