Urfin - Documentation

Home | Documentation | Architecture | Get It!

Urfin helps you to find files in your local Windows network. It has all information about files located in shared directories on computers in your office.

Search

To perform a search, please connect to Urfin using Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. To do it, please type address of machine where Urfin is installed and its port (if you don't know this information, please ask your system administrator). Usually Urfin is installed on file server and on port 2000 by default. For this case, you need t type in browser the following string:

http://<name-of-your-file-server>:2000

You will see the following page.

Search

Write the desired word or combination of characters that you expect to be present in the file you wish to find. If you are unsure what extension does the file have, please finish you search phrase by point and an asterisk: ".*". Please be sure that if you don't provide asterisk for extension, Urfin will find only files without it.

If you are unsure about some part of filename, also just type an asterisk instead of it.
It is also possible to replace unknown characters by question mark "?". If you are sure about the filename but don't remember one character only, please type a "?" sign to replace it. Urfin will search for all possible combinations.

So, an asterisk is a replacement for unknown combination of characters in word you search for, a question mark replaces only one unknown character.

Sample: To find file MyDoc.doc you can type *Doc.* or My*.* or M*D*.*c, M?Doc.d?c.

You can set up search for all files by typing "*.*. In this case, using checkboxes "Files" and "Folders", you can choose what would you like to search for - for files or directories, or for both.

After you have typed your search mask into the text field, please press button "Search".

Results of your search will be displayed in a table, columns in which have the following meaning:

  • Computer - computer on which the found file is located
  • Directory - name of directory (folder) where the founf file is located
  • File name - name of the found file
  • Size - size of the found file
  • Create - time when the file (or directory) was created
  • Modify - time of last modification of the file
  • Last scan - time of the last scanning of the found file

Search

Clicking on the link appearing in header of the table with results, you can sort found files by name, directory size or times. First click sorts results ascending, second resort descending.

By click on directory displayed in the table, this directory will be opened.
By click on file displayed in the table, this file either displayed in browser or run (you will be asked to choose).

If you are System Administrator, please use link "Administration" to login into administration section.

Urfin Administration Help

Access to the administration section is allowed only to person who installed Urfin, i.e. system administrator.

Section General

Here it is possible to configure main Urfin settings. All these settings are stored in file Urfin.ini located in the Urfin installation directory.

Search
  1. Path to DB files - path to directory where are stored Urfin internal database and index files. When this setting is changed, Urfin tries to create new set directory. If this is impossible, files stay in the old location and this setting will not be changed.
  2. Index files cache (recommended 0, 1 or 2) - sets size (in Mb) of memory allocated for index cash. Used only on scanning phase, when Urfin scans network and creates index files. The cash Isn't used in run-time, and is necessary only to make indexing faster. 0 - memory is not allocated (only disk is used), recommended values are 1 or 2 Mb.
  3. Extensions - defines what file types must be scanned. Only files with given extension(s) will be entered into Urfin database. Separate extensions by ";" to enter multiple file types. Default setting is ".*" - scan all files. Sample: ".mp3" only files with extension mp3 will be added to Urfin database (and be available for search later), ".doc;.mp3;.txt" - scan only files with extensions doc, mp3 ¨ txt.
  4. Timeout - defines period of time to repeat scanning. Value can be set in hours or days.
  5. Administration login: name/password - makes possible to change username/password for access of administration section.
  6. Logs enable: - enables/disables logging of
    • access - access to Urfin HTML pages
    • scan - scanning process
    • error - errors occurring in run-time

After modification of any settings in this section it is necessary to store modified data by pressing the button "Save" - then Urfin will save updated settings in its INI file. If you'd like to restore settings, leave it unmodified, please press button "Reset".

Search

By default "scan all available drives" option is set.
